As the subtitle says, this blog is mostly devoted to skepticism, science, and rationality. The best use of an About page is, I think, to spend a minute explaining why I’m bothering to put time into this blog.
The main reason is fairly straight forward and the sub-reasons will become apparent within later posts. I’m writing this to share my thoughts with a (hopefully) broader audience than I can reach on Facebook or Twitter. That is probably the main reason anyone writes a blog.
I am still a student in every field that I’m interested in (I would argue than an honest rationalist never stops being a student-and probably will in a post later) but I still feel that I have some good ideas, some of which I’ve arrived at before reading them written by someone else. That’s one of the other reasons I’m doing a blog; I can publish (in a sense) my thoughts on different things before I find them somewhere else and it becomes plagiarism. Not all of my ideas are gold, but I think a fair fraction of them are worth sharing.
Why do I think the topics I am choosing to write about are important enough to spend time writing about? Why not history or literature? For one, I enjoy those topics, but I wanted to focus on topics that I’m particularly passionate about and I think are the most important to us and our future. Obviously I do not intend these areas to be the only focus of our species; We wouldn’t make it very far in science if we didn’t take time to learn to read or farm food.
There are plenty of other places on the internet to find much better explanations of topics like history, literature, arts, music, etc than I am able to produce. In fact, there are better places to find explanations of the topics I plan to cover too. The point to bothering to do it myself is that I do have some (to the best of my knowledge) original ideas in these areas that I think might be worth sharing.
